Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is exactly what fans wished for

Ah yes, the Fate franchise has come a long way since the first visual novel in 2004. And after years of waitin,g Western audiences finally grabbed on the hype of this franchise, which enabled English localizations for various series, movies and games. As an avid fan, I was very excited to hear about Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star and its localization, which I did not expect after Fate/Extra CCC did not make it to the West. At last week’s gamescom, I had the opportunity to lay hands on the playable demo at Marvelous’ booth and now share my thoughts about it.

Immediately I was presented with flashy colors and fast-paced combat in an old but gold hack ‘n’ slash fashion, think Dynasty Warriors or Senran Kagura. The controls seem simple and smooth, and from what I saw, the game will be very easy to just pick up and play, at least gameplay-wise. The story takes places immediately after the events of Fate/Extra, thus it’s recommended to have played that game first or at least to get familiar with its plot to understand what is happening in Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star.

I’m really looking forward to finally get the full version of the game and play the other characters as well. Being familiar with the journey of the franchise, I believe that this is the game each fan has been eagerly waiting for. Fortunately, the wait won’t be very long since Fate/Extella: The Umbral Star is set to be released November 10 on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita this year.
