As there are fourteen different playable characters in Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, you should know how to use each one of them in an effective way. In this guide we will show you how to play as Ace and the others, the skills of each one of them and the best possible ways to combine the individual powers of your characters.

Ace is a mid-ranged fighter and is thanks to his speed and broad variety of skills able to take on the role of a fast damage dealer and supporter.

How to play Ace:

Like I’ve mentioned above, Ace is primarily a ranged fighter. His relatively low Max HP and Defense stats won’t allow you to attack an enemy in close combat, so try to hit them from medium distances. Ace’s melee attacks will not only hit multiple targets with each strike, his cards will also fly in curves. This allows you to attack enemies without even leaving your cover.

To survive against tougher enemies you should focus on Ace’s evasion abilities and his dodges to take full advantage of Breaksight and Killsight marks. Once they are available, unlock the skills Accelerate, Triple Slip, Slipstream and Untouchable to increase your chances of surviving rougher battles. Ace is one of the few characters who is faster after he has drawn his weapons, so make good use of that.

If you or your team members are using a magic based build, equip Ace’s ability Spirit Hand to replenish MP. If you prefer to choose a more support oriented build, switch to Life Hand to heal the wounds of your allies. As your second skill you should use Jackpot Shot, which is able to hit a target multiple times over a long distance. Once you’ve fired a Jackpot Shot, you are able to move around to start further actions, like healing your teammates or using normal attacks to increase your damage output.

Deuce

Deuce is the most gifted support character in the whole game, but also an easy target for your enemies, thanks to her relatively low Max HP and Defense stats.

How to play Deuce:

Deuce has pretty low Attack and Defense stats and the lowest Max HP in the whole game, which makes her an easy target for your enemies. Her normal attacks cast some kind of sound that hops around the whole area, which makes it quite tough to focus on an opponent, so you better choose a more attack-focused character as your active party member while Deuce supports your party with her amazing skills. Take control of her once her AG bar is empty to fill it with her normal attacks, so she can use her support skills again. You should use a normal attack from a safe distance, because of Deuce’s decreased movement speed while playing the flute. Just like Ace with his Jackpot Shot, Deuce is able to take additional actions after firing her normal attacks, and by additional actions I mean jumping around trying to not get hit by your foes.

Like everyone else, Deuce should focus on unlocking the skills Accelerate, Triple Slip, Slipstream and Untouchable to increase her chances to survive a fight. Her ability Hymn of Healing is without a doubt her most important skill, so you should max it as soon as possible. Next to this healing ability you should equip one of her support skills, like Concerto or Crescendo to increase the damage output of your allies or use Dissonant Sonata to stun your foes.

Trey

Trey is the most gifted ranged fighter in the whole game and is always a safe bet, thanks to his high damage output and his talent to hit Breaksight and Killsight marks.

How to play Trey:

Trey is an excellent choice when it comes to ranged damage. His upgraded normal attacks (Charged Shot) is definitely his best ability, which is able to inflict tons of damage from a safe distance, fast enough to make every Breaksight or Killsight hit count, while replenishing your AG bar. During the charge process of your arrows, you should move around to dodge incoming attacks.

Try to focus on unlocking the skills Triple Slip, Slipstream, Accelerate and Untouchable to increase his survivability and unlock Charged Shot and its upgrades as soon as possible, to fire one Charged Shot after another from a safe distance. If you want to increase your damage output even more, learn the skill Concentrate and its upgrades and combine it with your Charged Shots. As perfect as he is in ranged combat, as defenseless he acts when it comes to close-ranged fights. Try to get rid of your enemies by using Trey’s support skills, like Freezing Rain, Firewall or Blizzard BOM, which is an excellent choice thanks to his pretty good Max MP and Ice Magic stats.

How to play Cater:

Cater is able to shoot elemental bullets to take advantage of her enemies’ weaknesses, although they will cost you plenty of AG, so you should use them wisely. She has also the second lowest Max HP of the group and the lowest attack stats in the whole game, which makes Seven a much better character when it comes to elemental damage.

Cater’s best or only option to deal with enemies is by using her charged shot, as her normal projectiles are really slow. Unlike other characters like Trey, Cater doesn’t need to hold the attack button to charge her weapon. It will load up automatically while keeping the weapon drawn and unfired. Dodging and using her elementar skills won’t reset the charge.

To increase Cater’s chances of surviving in close-ranged combat, you should unlock Accelerate, Triple Slip, Slipstream and Untouchable. Her Land Mine skill is a great way to take care of closer enemies.

Cinque

Although Cinque is one of the slowest characters in the game, she can be used as a great damage dealer, or tank.

How to play Cinque:

Cinque is able to inflict huge damage to multiple enemies with just one strike, thanks to her great attack stats. Nonetheless, the biggest challenge is to actually hit an opponent, because of her incredibly low attack speed (you will have to dodge a lot). Each missing strike will offer your foes a dangerous chance to inflict damage to you, so you should be sure that your strike hits the enemy before attacking.

You should focus on unlocking the Charged attack and Earthquake skills as soon as possible, to stun your enemies and hit them with your normal attacks. Keep in mind that dodging won’t interrupt the charge level of your weapon. After maximizing her damage output you should use the AP to learn the evasion abilities like Accelerate, Slipstream and so on.

Although Cinque has great defense stats, it is a tough job to keep her healthy and alive, due to her slow movement and attack speed. You should always take a healer/supporter with you to inflict damage without worrying about your health. Next to Earthquake you can choose between Gaia Pulse and Payback. While Payback regenerates your health in exchange of a big amount of your AP, Gaia Pulse will increase Cinque’s damage output even more.

Sice is a great choice when it comes to fast attacks at a close distance.

How to play Sice:

Sice absorbs malice from defeated opponents to buff her attacks and allow the usage of some of her skills. You will also lose malice after you’ve got hit by an opponent, so you should choose wisely if you attack your enemy or not (You can take a look at her current malice level by taking a look at the aura of her scythe. Deep red with a black shine on the blade means your malice level is full). Although she is a gifted lightning magician, she has relatively low MP, so you should either take a supporter with you who is able to restore MP, or simply forget about it and focus on her close-ranged combat, which is probably the better choice.

Firstly you should learn the evasion-based abilities to prevent loosing your precious malice. After that, unlock the Moxie ability to increase the effectiveness of your malice absorption, the ability Negative Aura, which is able to heal you while inflicting lots of damage and the skill Tenacity to reduce your malice loss.

Sice’s most important attack ability is definitely the fully upgraded Negative Aura, as it is able to inflict a lot of damage and replenish your HP at the same time. It is up to you to decide which of her skills you choose for the second skill slot.

Seven

Seven is a gifted mid-range melee fighter and magic user. Like Cater, she is also able to use elemental attacks.

How to play Seven:

Next to Seven’s fast normal attacks, she is capable of adjusting her weapons with elemental energy in exchange of some AG.

Seven has a broad variety of command skills to use, so you should definitely adjust your equipped skills before starting a harder mission. Spend your APs on Elementalash and its upgrades Frostlash and Thunderlash to be able to exploit each of your opponent’s weaknesses. Next, unlock Seven’s evasion-based abilities and the long ranged skill Diving Strike. The skills Elementalash and Diving Strike are a great combination to deal as much damage as possible on the battlefield.

If you want to use a more resistant build, equip the skill Osmeselash to replenish your MP and Drainlash to absorb HP. As Seven is a gifted ice magician, you can also use Osmeselash in combination with an ice spell. So yeah, it is up to you to decide how you want to use Seven on the battlefield.

Eight

Eight is an expert when it comes to close-ranged combat and is able to start devastating combos to defeat his foes. He is basically the Rock Lee of Class Zero.

How to play Eight:

Next to his overall good stats, Eight’s most important benefit is his unbelievably fast movement speed.

Eight uses different stances to attack the enemy in different ways. These attacks will not only deal tons of damage to your foes, they will also regenerate your AG bar. The Swiftwind Stance is an incredibly fast combat style to cover up your enemies with a bunch of fast hits. The Wildfire Stance is able to add some flames to your kicks and punches. Attacking your enemies while using the Quickbolt Stance will replenish your HP.

At the beginning you should focus on unlocking Eight’s different stances and his evasion-based skills. If you want to increase his chance to survive even more, learn the skill Phantom Rush. The ability Lightspeed Jab allows him to downright fly over the battlefield and switch between opponents in seconds.

Max the stances you like the most and focus on Phantom Rush or Lighspeed Jab as a second skill. However, you should surely check out the other stances as well, as they are definitely worth it.

This punk is a quite talented mid-range melee fighter with highest Max HP and Defense stats of all cadets.

How to play Nine:

Normal attacks are without a doubt Nine’s safest bet to win a fight. Skills like Laser Lance or Javelin Throw add some range attacks to his repertoire of strikes.

Nine is thanks to his stats able to take a lot of damage and abilities like White Knight will provide him with a constant HP regeneration, making it even tougher to kill him.

Firstly you should focus on his evasion-based skills to increase your chance to dodge successfully. The White Knight skill casts a big shield around Nine, protecting him and nearby teammates while healing their HP. Next to the ability White Knight, you are free to choose one command ability to inflict damage to your opponents, although White Knight and his normal attacks are a basically enough to get rid of your enemies.

Jack

Jack is basically the glass cannon character of FF Type-0. He will kill most of the enemies with one strike, is as vulnerable as glass and as fast as a cannon.

How to play Jack:

Jack has the highest Attack stats in Class Zero and is therefore able to inflict literally tons of damage. On the other hand he is also the slowest character in the whole game, so you should either stow your weapon to move between your enemies or dodge the whole time. To redress his slow movement speed you should invest your APs in the evasion-based abilities and skills like Deliverance or Lightning Flash.

If you want to increase his incredible attack ratings even more, you can unlock the skill Piercing Gleam to lower your foe’s defense, Tranquility to deliver a devastating counterslash and Transience to inflict heavy damage in exchange of Jack’s HP. Jack is basically your human Eidolon, but his slow movement speed makes it hard to choose him as your main character.

Queen is a good combination between a bearable melee fighter and a support character, so you should use her as a support character.

How to play Queen:

Queen is able to take over different roles on the battlefield. Nevertheless, the supporter role should be seen as her main job in the party.

You should start upgrading Queen by leveling her skill Divine Judgment to be able to heal your allies. After that, unlock the skill Twinspell to get access to her second support skill, Magic Martyr. With these two skills equipped, you are able to replenish the HP and MP of your party. Next you should focus on unlocking the skill Balestra Lunge, as it is necessary to unlock the evasion-based abilities. After that you can spend your APs on her melee attacks.

How to play King:

Although King is a ranged fighter, he will inflict more damage the closer he gets to the opponent, which is most of the time a really bad idea because of his awful defense rating. He must also reload his weapon, so you should keep an eye on his ammunition.

You should start by unlocking his evasion-based skills, like Accelerate to increase his chance to survive in close combat. The ability Magazine Blast is a pretty strong attack to inflict damage in a wide area. As King has to reload his weapon you should unlock the Hi-Cap Magazine and the Multitask skill as soon as possible, to increase your ammo capacity and enable shooting while reloading. If you prefer the safe distance you can choose the skill Hawkeye to inflict damage to your enemies without risking your life. But if you are looking for a ranged fighter, choose Trey.

Machina

Machina is a great damage dealer, who is not only hard to kill, but also a pretty talented magic user.

How to play Machina:

Machina has incredible stats and is able to inflict lots of damage with his normal attacks and heal himself by using different abilites. He is best used with a long-range or magic attack and one skill that is able to replenish his HP, while inflicting most of the damage with his precise normal attacks.

At the beginning you should focus on his evasion-based abilities. As your healing ability you should choose between Siphon Sword, which is a short-range attack that drains HP, Dark Side, a long-range attack that drains HP from its target and is capable of stunning the enemy and the skill Awakening, a skill that restores all of Machina’s HP once activated. In addition to that you can select one of his damage dealing skills, like Cyclone Driver or a magic skill to take advantage of Machina’s great magic stats.

Rem

Rem can act as both, supporter and damage dealer. She has the best stats in every magic category.

How to play Rem:

Not only is Rem the most gifted magician in the whole game, she is also capable of dealing fast melee strikes with her daggers, which makes her to a great choice when it comes to damage dealing.

Unlock her support ability Manalchemy, as it is able to restore your MP. Once you’ve done that, invest your APs in her evasive skills and upgrade her melee combos to maximize her damage output and to make use of her attack speed.

You should at least have one skill in your setup that is able to restore your MP. Manalchemy is most of the times the best choice, as it replenishes the MP of your allies as well. As a second skill you can either choose a damage dealing attack, a magic skill or the ability Undying Wish, which is able to reraise nearby party members. Undying Wish can be used right before summoning an Eidolon to revive the sacrificing character.
